Energy Efficient Home – Discover the Secrets of Staying Warm by Adding a Fireplace

We built a new house and moved into it about three years ago. We built it to be energy efficient by adding lots of insulation and good windows. When we built it we took out the gas lines because we were going to go all electric. The only reason we put the gas back in was because when we were buying our tank less hot water heaters we found out real quick that we didn’t have big enough breaker boxes to handle the electric tank less hot water heaters. We had 2 200amp boxes but the electric heaters pulled so much this would not be enough if every thing kicked on at once. By the way the gas tank less hot water heaters are great, I can not say enough good about them.

Back to staying warn and where I am going with this article. We actually lived through the ice storm of 2009. Steve Beshear described the fallout from last week’s ice storm as our state’s largest-ever natural disaster. 4,600 Guardsman were dispatched to assist with the statewide crisis. On Sunday, they were going door to door in some areas, to citizens. On Monday, there were still a quarter-million people without power, with scores of residents who had first attempted to ride out the storm going to friend and family who had some form of heat.

Businesses were without power and fuel oil. Pretty scary when you have to think about how you are going to keep your family warm. It definitely took us back into a place in time to where we remembered how important the necessities are. Some people in our area were without power for towards eight weeks. when you have to worry about how to stay warm you realize how important just food, warmth and family are. Sometimes we forget this.

Now I can honestly say if things would have been different we may not of put in the gas fireplaces but someone was watching over us because we did. If it had not been for the gas fireplaces a lot of people would have been cold. The fireplaces required no electricity so we stayed warm. I actually have a see through fireplace so it kinda is exposed to the biggest part of the house and therefore kept most of fairly warm. The one part I haven’t mentioned is that I also put a fireplace in my master bathroom and I really got kidded for this one. What do you need a fireplace in the bathroom for? So aside from just taking a relaxing bath, now we can stay warm.

My advice to anyone is to put at least two heat sources in your home so when one is not available the other will be.

And learn how to have a more energy efficient home.
